Syllabus
  • 1. General notions of old age. Geriatrics and gerontology in practice
  • 2. Geriatric patient. The content explains types of population age composition and its development. Mortality, longevity
  • 3. Involutional process of ageing. Familiarization with the ageing processes and their significance. Physical symptoms of old age, adaptation in old age
  • 4. The concept of health and disease in the old age. Definition of health, disease, disorder, disability, handicap. Influence of psychosomatics and ailments in the old age
  • 5. Comprehensive geriatric assessment CGA. Explanation of individual parts of the CGA. Introduction to the terms vulnerable, elite, abled and independent senior
  • 6. Instability and falls in the elderly. The significance of evaluating posture and balance. Ageing and physical activity. Types of falls and their causes. Sarcopenia
  • 7. Immobilization syndrome. Explanation of terms in connection with certain systems
  • 8. Symptomatology of extrapyramidal disorders. Causes and symptoms of hypokinetic and hyperkinetic disorders
  • 9. Delirium, dementia, depression. Explanation of the individual notions of the listed geriatric syndromes
  • 10. Disorders of the internal environment. Thermoregulatory disorders in old age. Dehydration
  • 11. Metabolism and nutrition. Malnutrition, the role of vitamins. Obesity in the old age.
  • 12. Pain in the old age. Clinical peculiarities and aspects of pain in the old age. Pain assessment scales
  • 13. Abuse and neglect of the elderly. Clinical signs of neglect in seniors. The legal aspect
