- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to understand the basic definition of the life stage of old age, including its establishment in psychological theories. The student will be familiar with the basic characteristics of physical, cognitive and emotional processes in seniors. Attention will also be paid to intergenerational relationships, adaptation to old age, retirement and emerging loneliness in the elderly. The student will also be acquainted with the issue of dying and death, with emphasis on the detabuation of this problem. The aim of the course is to create a theoretical and practical basis for further study of applied disciplines, especially psychology and pedagogy.

- Expertise:
- the student acquires and demonstrates knowledge of the basic characteristics of the aging process from the point of view of developmental psychology, including the link between aging in psychological theories
- the student is able to characterize the essential features of this stage of ontogenetic development of man, understand his laws and conditionality
Professional skills:
- the student is able to orientate in the normal course of development of an individual in old age, including the risks associated with aging and dying
- the student is reliably oriented in the relevant professional literature, is able to search, interpret and apply the information obtained in practice
- the student is able to connect the acquired knowledge with the needs of practice in the field
General competences:
- the student will be able not only to use his knowledge and skills in specific work with clients, he will be better able to respond to the needs of clients; at the same time, the teaching methods of the subject will support the development of critical thinking, creativity and the student's ability to make decisions independently and responsibly - Syllabus
- 1. Developmental psychology, subject and partial disciplines of developmental psychology, history of development of the field (subject of developmental psychology in a broader and narrower sense, goals of developmental psychology, cooperation with other disciplines, disciplines of developmental psychology, brief history of the field).
- 2. Senior age in psychological theories.
- 3. Research methods in developmental psychology (research methodology, developmental psychology methods, research approaches, experimental research in developmental psychology).
- 4. Aging and old age from the point of view of andropsychology and gerontopsychology. Periodization. Structure of life developmental needs (theory of self-determination of Deci and Ryan, hierarchy of needs according to Abraham Maslow, division of needs according to Vágnerová).
- 5. Physical development and changes in old age (physical involution, involutional changes in sensory perception).
- 6. Changes of cognitive functions (basic characteristics of cognitive processes and their changes: attention, memory, intelligence, creativity, communication skills; attitude to the deterioration of cognitive abilities).
- 7. Emotional changes in old age (changes in emotional experience, neurophysiological processes affecting emotionality and their changes in old age; self-concept and self-esteem of seniors).
- 8. Adaptation to old age. Optimal adaptation to old age. Retirement (adaptation, retirement, changes in socialization, coping strategies, optimal adaptation to old age: an overview of theories of adaptation to old age, inactivity and immobilization syndrome, the concept of optimal adaptation according to Švancara, Selective optimization model with compensation) .
- 9. Partnerships of seniors. Intergenerational relationships (senior marriage, the impact of retirement on a marital relationship, experiencing intimacy and sexuality in old age, changing the importance of partnership in the context of meeting mental needs, the impact of deteriorating health on marriage; relationship to adult children and grandchildren, the role of grandparents, intergenerational cohabitation).
- 10. Loneliness and seniors (concepts of loneliness and loneliness, types of loneliness, overcoming loneliness, widowhood, entering into new partnerships, marriage in old age; issues of institutional care, nursing service, placement in a residential facility for the elderly).
- 11. Dying and death (dying, human attitudes to death, various theories describing reactions to impending death, emotions and needs of the dying, fear of death, needs of people in the immediate vicinity of death).
- 12. The concept of successful old age and active old age (preparation for old age, prevention of premature aging, creation of a life program).

- In course of continuous study, students use the study material, processing it to fulfil selected correspondence assignments which will be discussed in conclusion of the course. At the exam, students demonstrate knowledge of compulsory literature and lectures of the in-person instruction. Students will be able to continuously consult the topics studied individually or in teams, via e-mail, or in consultations upon request.
