Course objectives
The objective of the subject is to make students familiar with basic concepts in sociology. It outlines major streams of thinking in sociology and issues standing in the foreground of attention in sociological theory and research. The student will learn to understand the complexity of socialization in humans and the process of personality formation. The subject also explains the relationship between sociology and nursing.

  • 1. Sociology as a scientific discipline.
    2. Schools of thought in sociology, streams, paradigms - an overview.
    3. The society and the position of an individual in the society. The process of socialization, social interaction and communication.
    4. Social structure and dynamics, social entities and social groups.
    5. Culture.
    6. Social norms and deviations, social control.
    7. The subject of the sociology of medicine, an overview of sociological theory.
    8. Sociology of the patient/client, the role of the sociologist in health care facilities.
    9. Defining health and illness, issues related to disability.
    10. Reeducation, compensation and social rehabilitation.
    11. Social research in health care (design and planning).
    12. Social research in health care (data processing, interpretation and reporting).

Teacher's information
Contact hours are based on consultation of selected topics. At the website, students can use learning materials with on-line assignments. Credits are granted upon successful completion based on a written assessment where the student demonstrates knowledge of compulsory and recommended literature and discusses their on-line assignments. The student can consult the mentor concerning independently studied topics, be it in person, in group sessions or via e-mail.
Requirements for credit: seminar paper (group work) - research in health care, meeting the credit test criteria with a minimum of 80 % correct answers.
