Course objectives
The course is designed as a theoretical-practical one. It provides knowledge and skills for providing pre-medical first aid. The learner will acquire basic knowledge of the principles of first aid for various health damaging conditions. The course also includes knowledge of disaster medicine, emergency care and crisis management. The course describes the most common causes and symptoms of traumatic conditions (e.g., head, chest, and extremity injuries, burns, etc.) The main emphasis is on basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation for children and adults. Upon completion of the course, the student will be familiar with recommended procedures (guidelines, 2021) for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and acute conditions requiring basic and extended first aid.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge: the student can describe the causes and symptoms of selected accident and non-accident health damaging conditions and can explain the principles of first aid. The student can define recommended CPR procedures and describe the importance of the integrated rescue system and crisis management. The student is able to provide effective first aid and CPR for selected traumatic and non-traumatic health damaging conditions. General competence. Upon completion of the course, the learner will be familiar with the problems of first aid and CPR. In further study and clinical practice, the learner will deepen and improve his/her knowledge and skills.
Syllabus
  • 1. The importance and provision of first aid, setting priorities. 2. Disaster medicine, integrated rescue system, teamwork. 3. Pre-medical first aid - stab wounds, gunshot wounds, seizure wounds. 4. Animal injuries, snake bites. Basics of dressing technique. 5. Bleeding - internal, external, arterial, venous, mixed, shock conditions. 6. First aid for choking, drowning. Damage by heat, cold, electric current, chemical substances. 7. Spasms, fractures. 8. Serious injuries - head and central nervous system, spine and spinal cord, neck, chest, abdomen, large bones and joints and pressure injuries. 9. Severe acute conditions of the u child - acute respiratory insufficiency, febrile convulsions. 10. Basics of emergency resuscitation. 11. Monitoring the health status of the affected person. 11. Positioning and transport of the disabled. Ensuring intraosseous access. 12. Excessive labour, first aid in emergencies.

Teaching methods
Contact teaching (lecture, presentation, critical thinking methods, role-playing, instruction, demonstration, discussion, self-study) is guided by a system of consultations on selected topics. The combined part of the study is carried out in an e-learning course on the e-portal http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. For teaching, the students are provided with study aids including correspondence assignments. The student will be able to continuously consult individually studied topics of the course through individual or group consultations or e-mail. Completion of 80% attendance in class, demonstration of activity, theoretical and practical knowledge continuously during the course of the course (a student who, for serious reasons, is unable to attend the compulsory class will be assigned an alternative method of fulfilling the learning requirements by the instructor). Credit: written test, 80% success rate Examination: oral and practical test of professional knowledge and skills.
Assessment methods
Meeting 80% attendance at the training (a student who could not attend the compulsory training for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling the study obligations by the teacher) and passing the written test is a condition for the award of credit.
