Course objectives (in Czech)
The aim of this advanced course is to bring students to an internationally recognised level of written and spoken English. Past experience has shown that it opens new opportunities to students in companies, teaching etc. because it shows that the student has reached a very high competence in general English.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • 1. The great persuaders
    Picture discussion: false or artificial? clean or wash? needs doing, myself, yourself etc.
    Listening: multiple matching of five speakers talking about travel, the media, or health.
    Use of English: modifiers/intensifiers; have to/don't have to/must/need.
    Reading: words about media; reading about advertisements; phrasal verb (get).
    Composition: advantages and disadvantages
    Speaking: opinion.
    Revision and extension, listening test: revision of unit 12.
    2. It's a mad world
    Picture discussion: recognising features of animals.
    Reading: words about animals and places; multiple matching paragraph headings
    into a written text.
    Use of English: conditionals; key word transformations.
    Listening: gap filling.
    Composition: describing places
    Speaking: problem solving
    Revision and extension: relative clauses and modal verbs.
    3. Guilty or not guilty
    Reading: words about crime and phrasal verbs (make); reading about court cases.
    Use of English: make/let/allow; and passives
    Composition (describing a process) use of the passive to avoid repetition.
    Revision and extension: revision of units 12, 13 and 14.
    4. The power of words.
    Picture discussion, reading: phrasal verbs; cause and result in conditional sentences.
    Use of English: between or among? It's time.....
    Use of English: hypothetical meaning; to have something done.
    Composition (letter and narrative): formal and informal letter styles
    Reading: spoken and written language; reading about who invented writing.
    Revision and extension: if, unless, when or in case? conditionals; mixed tense forms
    5. Review and practice tests.
    Previous FCE tests on Reading, Writing, Use of English, Listening and
    all five parts of Speaking.
