Case Study: Helping Bety Find Her Way
Bety is a 16-year-old girl living in Prague with her mother and older sister. She is very smart, she likes to play video games but she has no particular hobbies. She does not have many friends either. Her parents divorced when she was just six years old, and since then, she has struggled with the impact of their separation. She was always a "daddy’s girl", and the divorce hit her especially hard. After moving to Prague, her father completely withdrew from her life, except for paying child support. He has no contact with her and does not participate in her upbringing.
Despite her struggles, Bety has never used drugs or alcohol, but she smokes cigarettes regularly. Until recently, she attended school, but things changed drastically after a difficult breakup with her boyfriend. Since then, her behavior has worsened significantly—she lies to her mother, frequently runs away from home, and has completely stopped attending school. As a result, she is now registered at the labor office (unemployment office) but refuses to look for a job or pursue any kind of education.
Bety lacks motivation and any desire to change her situation. She feels lost, disconnected, and without a purpose. Her mother and sister are worried about her, but they don’t know how to help.
Your Task:
- How can Bety regain motivation and find meaning in her life?
- What steps can be taken to encourage her to return to education or work?
- What kind of support system does she need?
- What social services or interventions could help her?
Think about realistic and effective solutions to help Bety find her way again. How can society, her family, and professionals support her journey back to stability and self-confidence?
