Introductory information and conditions

The aim of the course is to introduce PhD students to the methodology of science and research, methods, procedures and tools of scientific work and information resources. Students will be able to effectively search for relevant information, formulate research questions and hypotheses, choose adequate methods of scientific research and apply systematic approach to solving scientific problems, be able to formulate relevant conclusions of their research and participate in research projects.


Conditions for passing the course

Oral exam consisting of a professional discussion and defence of a seminar paper. In the professional discussion, two questions are asked based on the content of the course. The seminar paper takes the form of a detailed elaboration of a research proposal, including a critical review of the literature and methodology on the dissertation topic. In the seminar paper, the student will elaborate the current state of knowledge, theoretical background, formulate the aim of the work and research questions or hypotheses and describe the methods used.

Research project and public support of science and research

Information resources for research at SU SBA, grant and project opportunities, project application processing and its requirements, research community and databases, researcher identifiers, scientometrics, citation system.


Research projects:

At SBA it is possible to get involved in several internal and external projects. It is advisable to consult the engaging in the project with the Vice-Dean for science and research, supervisor or Head of Department. The most appropriate way for students to get involved is through the Student Grant Competititon (SGS) project:

External projects are mainly project of Czech Science Foundation (https://gacr.cz/en/) or Technology agency (https://www.tacr.cz/en/), where the student is usually involved as a member of the research team:


Researcher identifier

For scientists, it is appropriate to use scientist identifiers or scientific social networks. I recommend setting up an ORCID identifier, which is often requested when publishing in journals or appropriate to include with a CV.

ORCID is a non-profit, community-driven effort to create and maintain a registry of unique researcher identifiers
and a transparent method of linking research activities and outputs to these identifiers.

Research community and databases

The most important are the databases Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus. Scopus and Web of Science are the largest worldwide-used citation databases.
