Course objectives

In this subject, we deal with computer networks. The goal is to get familiar with the concept and the architecture of computer networks including wireless networks, their types, common protocols, network devices, techniques of network administration.

Syllabus:

  1.  Introduction to computer networks. Network hardware
  2.  Protocols, standards, ISO/OSI reference model. Network stacks, the TCP/IP network model.
  3. Network transfer characteristics, transfer paths.
  4. Local networks - Ethernet: frames, cables, half and full-duplex.
  5. Network and transport layer functions, IPv4, IPv6, TCP connection. Network addresses and routing.
  6. Application protocols, network services, DNS.
  7. Wireless and mobile networks.
  8. Network security and network administration.

The content of the exercises partly follows the lectures, but mainly we focus on:

  • basic configuration of switch and router,
  • crimping cables and network outlets,
  • working with addresses, subnetting,
  • security of network devices, including configuring SSH access.
