Course objectives
The course will provide a basic overview of the content, focus and contribution of the study of medieval, modern and industrial archeology of the Middle Ages for historical knowledge. The explanation will define the subject and method, the definition of the field within the social sciences, interdisciplinary cooperation and the use of natural science and technical fields. The types of settlement structures with the characteristics of the finding environment, the specifics of research and the history of research, focused on the study of villages, towns, manor houses, church monuments, material culture, the natural environment and regional peculiarities, will be discussed separately. In the lecture part, the theoretical starting points will be explained to the audience, and in the seminar, the wider context.
Learning outcomes
Familiarization with the theoretical and practical content of archeology of the Middle Ages and the modern era from the point of view of historical knowledge.

  • 1. Subject of study, chronology, periodization and dating. 2. History of research, archaeological paradigm and perception of time. 3. Archaeological sources and their characteristics, interdisciplinarity of historical archaeology. 4. Historical geography and climatic framework in historical times. Environmental Archeology and Historic Landscape. 5. Medieval modernization, Slavic and medieval colonization. Ethnic and social aspects of historical archaeology 6. Auxiliary historical sciences in the service of archeology 1 (paleography, codicology, epigraphy, diplomacy, chronology). 7. Auxiliary historical sciences in the service of archeology 2 (sphragistics, heraldry, genealogy, numismatics, metrology). 8. Archeology of material culture and the role of artifacts in medieval everyday life. 9. Historical paleoeconomics - raw material sources. 10. Historical montanistics – basics of methodology and terminology, overview of historical development. 11. Historical montanistics - examples. 12. Postmedieval archaeology. Industrial archaeology. 13. Historical archeology in Czech Silesia and the specifics of regional research.
