Course objectives
In the course focused on church issues, students will get to know the spiritual and material evidence of religion of life in the form of sacral architecture, funeral rites and monuments associated with the Christian cult. The interpretation will outline the development of church organization, the building of parish and order structures, the functions of churches and monasteries, liturgy and principles religious life, funeral customs, the cult of saints and the role of pilgrimage. Attention will be paid to reform movements and non-Christian confessions, which contributed to the diversification of religious thinking. Factography of individual topics will be discussed in lectures and developed using practical examples in seminars.
Learning outcomes
Orientation in church issues. Knowledge of relevant sources in the scope of lectures and basic literature. Application of knowledge in archaeological practice.
Syllabus
  • 1. Religious systems and their ideological sources, sources, terminology, literature. 2. Pagan and Christian tradition, church mission and reception of Christianity. 3. Archaeological evidence of Christianization (church architecture, rite, objects). 4. Administrative development of the parish organization in Bohemia and Moravia. 5. Religious life and its forms, religious houses, monastic schools and scriptoriums. 6. Orders with a monastic and military way of life, economic courts. 7. Churches and monasteries, plaques, votive objects and documents of liturgical activity. 8. Cemeteries and burial practices, ossaries, ossuaries, devotionals. 9. Medieval pilgrimages and the cult of saints, places of pilgrimage, routes and "souvenirs". 10. Church crisis (Hussiteism, Reformation and Protestantism, Brethren Unity, New Baptists). 11. Manifestations of religious thinking in the profane area. 12. Non-Christian monuments, Judaism. 13. The civilizing contribution of religion to the formation of the spiritual foundations of European identity. Study
