The seminar can also be attended by first-year students. It is an introduction to the development of Czech linguistics, their fields and representatives.

Course objectives
In the seminars, students get acquainted with the development of Czech studies and with recent linguistic literature, which describes the current state and developmental tendencies in individual language plans. They learn to evaluate these phenomena in relation to language culture, to get to know the personalities of Czech linguistics and their focus with respect to culture and language development.
Learning outcomes
After graduation, the student will gain knowledge in the field of linguistic disciplines and will be acquainted with the main personalities of Czech linguistics and their contribution to individual areas of Czech research.In particular, however, he will be acquainted with the various stages of development of Czech linguistics and thus gain an overview suitable for completing other subjects.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to new grammars and dictionaries and changes in the evaluation of some phenomena 2. Standard, non-literary, general and colloquial Czech; use due to the communication situation 3. Codification, norm, usage. Attitudes towards codification before and now 4. Developmental tendencies and language culture; basic concepts 5. Use of corpus linguistics for the study of "movement" in language 6. Czech abroad; stagnation of development 7. Bilingualism and diglossia, influence on expression during the development of the Czech language 8. Foreign language in the Czech environment 9. Anglicisms and their (in) functionality in contemporary expression 10. Gender in language; influence on changes in expression 11. Czech of the 20th century; development of spelling, grammatical phenomena and stylistic evaluation of language means 12. Czech of the 21st century; development of spelling, grammatical phenomena and stylistic evaluation of language means 13. The latest trends in the development of Czech; overused words, grammatical, semantic and stylistic narrowing
