Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to unify the students' experiences with operating systems and to extend the level of knowledge and skills focusing on Windows and Linux systems in the most used versions. Students get acquainted with advanced graphics administration, text-based administration basics, and other techniques related to installation, maintenance and repair of systems.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- work in a graphical environment of administration of Windows and Linux operating systems.
- perform basic tasks in the text-mode administration of operating system administration.
- address issues related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of operating systems.
Syllabus
  • 1. Using MS Windows - orientation in the file system, versions and editions.
  • 2-3. Managing Windows in graphical mode - getting information, hardware and performance, security, user management, services, network management.
  • 4. Windows Registry - registry files, registry access options, backup, registry key contents.
  • 5.-6. Command line - help, working with directories and files, searching, redirection of input and output, variables. Powershell.
  • 7. Introduction to operating system security - automatic system and application updates, common forms of attacks and defenses against them.
  • 8. About operating systems - most common licenses, UNIX and UNIX-like systems.
  • 9. Using Linux - Linux distributions, basics of using Linux in a graphical environment.
  • 10.-11. Features of UNIX systems - orientation to the file system, users, processes, files, devices, access permissions and file properties.
  • 12.-13. Text mode in Linux - introduction to using the text shell in Linux. Getting help, working with directories and files, redirecting input and output, variables, aliases.
