- Course objectives
- The course provides an overview of streams and movements of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present era. It stresses the generic and thematic wealth of British literature throughout the ages. The course follows up on Introduction to Literature and seeks to apply the knowledge thereby acquired in practice.
- Learning outcomes
- Orientation in the chronology of English literature. Familiarity with the main currents and authors of the English literary canon. Ability to critically interpret literary texts.

- 1. Anglo-Saxon literature. (reading: Beowulf, excerpt)
- 2. English medieval literature ()
- 3. Literature of the English Renaissance (reading: G. Chaucer: Canterbury Tales, one selected tale)
- 4. Literature of the English Renaissance (reading: W. Shakespeare: Macbeth).
- 5. Metaphysical poets (reading: A. Marvell: To His Coy Mistress, 4 selected poems)
- 6. The first half of the 18th century in British literature: the beginnings of the novel.
