Course objectives
The Italian Syntax lecture focuses on the fundamental issues related to the structure of the Italian simple and complex sentence. A clear distinction is consistently made between the concepts of “sentence” and “utterance”, thus allowing for analysis at the levels of formal syntax, semantics and pragmatics. From the perspective of formal syntax, the course focuses on sentence structure and sentence constituents, while at the semantic level particular attention is paid to the function of diathesis. The transition from formal syntax to the pragmatic level involves the classification of sentence and utterance types, the description of their modal patterns, and an overview of the factors involved in the communicative situation. With regard to complex sentences, particular attention is devoted to coordination and subordination and to the classification of subordinate clauses. The phenomena studied are practised through exercises and text analysis.

  5. Word order in the Italian sentence;
  6. Sentence types I; Declarative and interrogative sentences; Jussive and optative sentences;
  7. Complex sentence; Coordination; Subordination; Subordinate (dependent) clause;
  8. Formal and functional classification of subordinate clauses;
  9. Subject clause, object clause; Relative clause;
  10. Circumstantial clauses I (adverbial clauses);
  11. Circumstantial clauses II: causal, purpose and consecutive clauses;
  12. Concessive, temporal and comparative clauses;
  13. Modality in subordinate clauses.
