Course objectives
Legislation is necessary for the activities and functionality of memory institutions. The aim of this seminar is to acquaint students with the legislative standards valid and applied in museum and other memory institutions in the Czech Republic and the European Union. To understand the current situation, a historical excursion into individual stages of the development of legislation is necessary.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will know:
- basic outlines of the history of museum legislation;
- law and other legal norms concerning museums valid in the Czech Republic;
- the context of museum and cultural heritage legislation in the EU;
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to museum legislation. 2. Act on Museums and Galleries vs. Act on the Protection of Museum Collections. 3. The conception of museum development in the Czech Republic. 4. Administration, registration and protection of museum collections. 5. Protection of museum collections and collection objects against theft, burglary and fire. 6. Inventory and accounting in museum practice. 7. Creation of collections, care of collections and export of collection items abroad. 8. Copyright law and budgetary rules. 9. Support of culture and the State Fund of Culture of the Czech Republic. 10. State cultural policy. 11. State monument care. 12. Cultural heritage and its protection according to international conventions. 13. Professional codes of ethics in museology.
