Course objectives
The course will familiarize students with basic cartographic concepts. It will also highlight the diverse perspectives from which maps, plans, atlases, and globes can be viewed (geography, history, art history, and library studies). A significant portion of the course will be devoted to a review of the history of cartography from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, with particular emphasis on the territory of the Bohemian Crown. Cartographic achievements will also be analyzed as works of art. — carriers of content and ideas. It will be important to understand maps and plans in their literary, historiographic, political, and legal contexts, thus considering the texts accompanying cartographic works, such as those found in atlases. Another important component is the usefulness of maps in the study of cultural landscapes, using examples from both "external" and internal borderlands (e.g., the border between Bohemia and Moravia). Based on the lecture, students will prepare seminar papers — analyzing selected maps and plans or analyzing a section of the terrain closely linked to cartography.
Learning outcomes
The student will be acquainted with the issue of creating maps and other cartographic aids in the historical context of geographical discoveries from antiquity to the 20th century. Also learn about the attractiveness of an old map or plan as a work of art and a historical source.
