Předmět má za cíl seznámit posluchače s estetickými teoriemi 19. a 20. století, v úzkém sepětí s filozofií a dalšími humanitními vědami, uzavřeno pojednáním o estetice postmoderní doby, pro kterou je charakteristické zpochybnění univerzální platnosti stěžejních kognitivních kategorií.
