Předmět je zaměřen na získání přehledu o základních matematických postupech používaných ve fyzikálních teoriích. Těžiště výuky je kladeno do těchto oblastí matematiky: základy funkcionální analýzy, funkce komplexní proměnné, rovnice matematické fyziky, základy teorie distribucí a teorie grup. Ve výuce se také aplikují metody z předchozích kurzů matematiky. Důraz je kladen na pochopení základních pojmů, výpočetní praxi a fyzikální aplikace.
