- Course objectives
- This subject is intended for students specializing in theoretical subnuclear physics. It deals with the quantum chromodynamics, the gauge theory of strong interactions.
- Syllabus
- Quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Empirical reasons for the introduction of the color of quarks. Color group SU(3). Langrange density of free quarks, invariance to global SU(3). Local gauge transformations, gluons as calibration bosons. QCD Lagrangian. Interaction between gluons as a result of non-Abelian nature of SU(3) color group. Feynman rules from covariant quantization. Ghosts as a means of compensation of non-physical gluon states. Radiation corrections to the qqg vertex, running coupling constant. Asymptotic freedom. Confinement of quarks and gluons. Selected processes. Showers in electron-positron annihilation.

Active participation on tutorial sessions and the timely completion of home tasks is required. Detailed criteria will be announced by the tutorial lecturer. The exam consists of the main written part and a supplemental oral part. - Language of instruction

- The attending of lectures is recommended, that of tutorial sessions is compulsory. If a student was absent for serious reasons, the teacher may prescribe him/her an alternative way of fulfilling the duties.
