Course objectives
This subject is intended for students specializing in theoretical subnuclear physics. It deals with the quantum chromodynamics, the gauge theory of strong interactions.
Syllabus
  • Quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Empirical reasons for the introduction of the color of quarks. Color group SU(3). Langrange density of free quarks, invariance to global SU(3). Local gauge transformations, gluons as calibration bosons. QCD Lagrangian. Interaction between gluons as a result of non-Abelian nature of SU(3) color group. Feynman rules from covariant quantization. Ghosts as a means of compensation of non-physical gluon states. Radiation corrections to the qqg vertex, running coupling constant. Asymptotic freedom. Confinement of quarks and gluons. Selected processes. Showers in electron-positron annihilation.
