- Course objectives
- The class will offer an overview of German literature between - grossly speaking - the 17th and 19th century, starting from canonical and important text examples. It is focusing at the periods of Early Modernity (i.e., the so-called "Baroque"), Storm and Stress, the Classical Period, and intermediats between the latter, and Romanticism. Basically, it is being asked why Goethe and Schiller still count as the most important representatives of German literature in many places all over the world, how it occurred that their image developed in that way, what their epoque and their lifes looked like, and on what kind of preconditions the German classical literature is founded. Most important didactical aim is to inspire students at self-guided reading of literary texts and text samples. All texts and exercises are to be presented at the website "Moodle" or in the library of the institute of German philology. Class schedule: Introduction. "Baroque" (Early Modernity) and Enlightenment. Texts: Paul Fleming: "An Sich"; Andreas Gryphius: "Abend" (from the sonett cycle on different times of the day); "Threnen des Vatterlandes (Anno 1636)"; Gotthold E. Lessing: "Emilia Galotti" Storm and Stress; Classical texts (Part 1) Texts: Johann Wolfgang Goethe: "Prometheus"; excerpt from "Die Leiden des jungen Werthers"; Friedrich Schiller: "Kabale und Liebe". Classical texts (Part 2) Texts: Selection from the correspondence between Goethe and Schiller (Schiller's portrait of Goethe); "Iphigenie auf Tauris" (excerpt); Friedrich Hölderlin: "Hälfte des Lebens"
