- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide students with the information of the development of Czech from the oldest recorded times till modern periods. The course is aimed at the evolution of sound system and morphology supported with the selection of texts from various historical periods.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will be able to: - define individual periods of the development of Czech language and explain their typical features - describe the sound changes from the Old Czech to the modern period - describe the morphological changes from the Old Czech to the modern period
- Syllabus
- 1. Periodization in the evolution of the Czech language
- 2. Sound changes from the Proto-Slavic to Proto-Czech
- 3. Sound changes from 10th to 14th century
- 4. Sound changes since 14th century
- 5. Declension of nouns I: o-stems, jo-stems masculine
- 6. Declension of nouns II: u-stems, o-stems neuter
- 7. Declension of nouns III: a-stems, ja-stems, i-stems, consonantal stems
- 8. Personal pronouns, demonstratives, possessives
- 9. Short and long adjectives, comparison
- 10. Verbs I: classification, athematic verbs
- 11. Verbs II: modus, aspect, participles, thematic verbs
- 12. Verbs III: infinitive, supine
