Course objectives
On successful completion of the class, students will have been introduced to techniques and good practices promoting efficient translation process. The class’s primary objective is to outline and explain the principles and methods hidden behind translation software packages, which if applied correctly, allow translators to achieve and maintain overall quality and consistency of target texts. Students will have also been pointed to specialised associations of experts in the field and encouraged to learn more independently. Students shall be required to work on their own project portfolio that will be assessed towards the end of semester.

Students will acquire the following skills: - ability to operate TM-based software tools and understanding the underlying principles

  • 1. Introduction - Tools of the Trade 2. Capturing Data in Electronic Form 3. Associations and Ethics for Translators 4. Machine Translation Systems 5. Translation Memory Systems 6. Terminology Management Systems 7. Corpus Analysis Software 8. Regular Expressions and Wildcards 9. Parallel Corpora and Corpus Data Analyses 10. Parallel Concordancing and QA Features 11. Quality Assurance 12. Managing Translation Projects 13. Final discussion and presentations.
