Course objectives
During the lectures, students will also learn about craft and provincial technologies (production and chronology of bronze vessels, fibulas and other metal objects, and ceramics including a Terra sigillata). From the ancient art the emphasis is placed on sculpture/portrait and historical relief, Pompeian painting and architecture; from small craft on the development of glass production, toreutics and fine ceramics. The Interpretation is dealing with technological and stylistic changes during the development which are relevant for the chronology. The attention is focused on the areas where Roman art reached the maximal development and the greatest differences from Greek art.

    5. Roman provincial lamps and glass
    6. Roman Art of the middle and the late Republic
    7. The art of the Roman imperial period, I., II., III. and IV. Pompey's style
    8. Augustan classicism, art of Julian-Claudian period
    9. Roman Art of Flavian and Trajan period
    10. Roman Art of Hadrian and Antoninus period
    11. Roman Art of Constantine the Great period
    12. The architecture of the late period, Roman catacombs, mosaics, cameos and other major attractions of arts (eg. ivory diptych)
