- Course objectives
- The course will acquaint the students with fundamental terms of literary theory. The starting point will be general considerations of literature, its relation to or distinction from other disciplines, its nature and function, as well as the function and role of language in literature. With the help of literary criticism and linguistics, the course will analyze the process of literary communication and different conceptions of the author, reader, literary artifact and its meaning. Discussions will concern the terms syzhet and fabula, typology of characters, main genres and narrative techniques, tropes and the basics of poetics (rhythm, rhyme, verse, alliteration, etc.). Matters of style and other basic terms, such as juxtaposition or intertextuality, will also be dealt with. Later on, all these terms and topics will be applied to specific texts. The aim of the cycle is to provide the students both with a solid theoretical background and practical equipment for textual analysis, which they will use in subsequent learning. Contents: 1.
