Course objectives
During the lectures, students learn about creative expression of Stone Age man. Attention is paid to the development of artistic expression in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the selected sites and important phenomena. Will be made to the importance of Moravian findings in the European context. Lecture series acquaint students with zoomorphic and anthropomorphic motifs, schematic symbols and with pseudo-artifacts. Students will be able to analyze and stylistically interpret artwork. Special attention is paid to figural motif, especially female sculpture, in the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Eneolithic periods.
Syllabus
  • 1. Characteristics of art, means of expression, the reason of artistic expression, artistic categories, themes.
    2. The oldest artistic expressions in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, culture with the largest artistic manifestations, the most important sites with the artistic findings.
    3. Workshop: examination of selected imaging techniques.
    4. The art of Gravettian / Pavlovian (Dolní Věstonice).
    5. The art of Gravettian / Pavlovian (Předmostí u Přerova; Pavlov).
    6. The art of Gravettian / Willendorf-kostěnkien (Brno, Francouzská ulice; Petřkovice u Ostravy; Moravany nad Váhom, SR).
    7. The art of Magdalenian, hunting scenes (Jeskyně Pekárna u Brna). Mesolithic art.
    8. Paleolithic Venus, stylized sculptures of women and breast pendants.
    9. The art of Neolithic. Figural sculptures made by Linear Band Ceramic Culture and by Stroke-ornamented Culture. Anthropomorphic motifs on ceramic vessels, zoomorphic vessels.
    10. The Neolithic and Eneolithic art in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Lengyel figural sculptures, development of Lengyel Venus (Střelice, Maloměřice, Mašůvky and Štěpánovice types).
    11. Artistic expression of the people of Baden Culture in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, sacral ceramics (Včelince, SR; Poprad, SR et al.) and Idols.
    12. Excursion: Anthropos Institute in Brno (Venus) or Comenius Museum in Přerov and Mamutov.
