Course objectives
The course deals with the main problems of Italian lexicology, semantics and lexicography. The lectures are dedicated to the structure of Italian lexicon, its origin and enrichment (by the means of derivation, composition and foreign borrowings). Italian linguistic material is used in order to illustrate various types of words (synonyms, antonyms, homonyms etc.). The course also points out various problems of diachronic semantics, such as the theory and the classification of changes of meaning and their causes (metaphors, metonymies, popular etymology and contamination, euphemisms, taboo, etc). A special stress will be put on the importance of research in lexicology for the quality of the lexicographical production (characteristic features of main Italian vocabularies).
