Course objectives
The goal of the course is to acquaint students with the functions of the components in personal computers. The lectures are focused on the solutions common in the practice.
Syllabus
  • 1. History of Computing technology. Computer structure, BIOS, UEFI.
    2. Connectors and interfaces.
    3. Motherboard, chipset, bus.
    4. Processors. Processor architectures, instruction sets, various types of processors.
    5. Primary memory.
    6. Storage - hard drive, optical memory, flash memory, solid state drive. RAID.
    7. I/O devices.
    8. Expansion cards - graphic, audio, network.
    9. Power and cooling.
    10. Basic maintenance and diagnostics of computer.

Graduates of this course should manage to choose hardware according to established criteria, maintenance and upgrade of a computer and its components. He should understand functionality of the individual components of a computer and be able to evaluate their properties.
