- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to get acquainted with the basic issues of the history of world theatre in connection with the general history of culture and art. The overview lecture provides basic information about the developmental context of the history of theatre in the period 17-19th century, specifically the stages of Baroque, Classicism, Enlightenment and Romanticism. Attention will be focused on both aesthetic and philosophical concepts of theatrical and dramatic production in individual stylistic epochs, but also on the development of staging forms, scenography and acting.
- Syllabus
- 1. Baroque theatre history: Definition of Baroque. Baroque court theatre. School and folk theatre. Scenography of Baroque theatre. Theatre in Germany: carnival plays - Hans Sachs, Hans Rosenplut, Hauptaction/Haupt-und Staatsaktion.
- 2. Theatre of French classicism I: The position of the theatre in France 17.-18. century. Aesthetic canon of classicism - Nicolas Boileau. Origin and development of French opera and ballet.
- 3. Theatre of French classicism II: Theatre buildings and scenography. Acting and organization of theatrical life.
- 4. Theatre of French classicism II: Playwrights of French classicism. Periodization and main figures, especially Corneille, Racine and Moliere.)
- 5. French theatre during the Enlightenment: From Classicism to the Frenchr evolution (Denis Diderot, Voltaire, Paul Marivaux, Pierre Beaumarchais).
- 6. Italian theatre during the Enlightenment: Carlo Goldoni, Carlo Gozzi.)
- 7. German theatre and drama during the Enlightenment: Theatre reforms and the idea of national theatre. J. Chr. Gottsched, G. E. Lessing. Weimar classic. Preromanticism – movement "Sturm und Drang" (J. W. Goethe, Friedrich Schiller).
- 8. Theatre in 18th century England: Theatre during and after the Restaurant. Theatre scene. Development of acting. Playwrights (John Gay, Henry Fielding, R. B. Sheridan).
- 9. European romantic theatre and drama I: Theory of romantic theatre (Schlegel brothers). German romantic drama (H. Kleist, G. Büchner, etc.). Vienna folk theatre (F. Raimund, J. N. Nestroy).
- 10. European romantic theatre and drama II: Changes and development of drama and genre in England (neoclassicism, pre-romanticism - G. G. Byron, P. B. Shelley). Actors of English theatre (D. Garrick, E. Kean, Ch. Macready). French romantics (A. Dumas-father, V. Hugo, A.de Musset, A.de Vigny). Russian romantic theatre (A. S. Gribojedov, A. S. Pushkin, M. J. Lermontov). Polish romantic theatre (Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki).
