Course objectives
Language of modern media will be introduced and illustrated with examples. Students will be familiarized with various communicative aspects reflected in media.
Learning outcomes
After completing the seminars the student is able to recognize the types of media, know them structural and language means; identify neutral expression and tabloidization, reveal manipulative language and strategies, search media databases such as Newton Media.

  • 1. Media types, print vs. print network media; social situation affecting media character and media language 2. Report as a basic journalism unit, headline 3. Media separation 4. Infotainment 5. Story and story 6. Analytical genres (editorial, commentary, review, criticism vs. blog) 7. Fiction genres (reportage and column) 8. Character of quotation in journalistic text 9. Colloquiality and expressivity of contemporary media 10. Manipulation and influence by language 11. Advertising in news 12. Discussion programs on television; the nature of dialogue in the media, types of questions 13. Repetition
