Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the history and culture of Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg. In the center of attention are selected historical epochs, their most important events and personalities. Attention is also paid to cultural life, geography, economics, gastronomy, customs and traditions of individual countries.
Learning outcomes
The student is able to identify and describe the most important historical epochs in the history of the countries studied. The student is able to identify and summarize the most important features of political, economic and cultural life in each country.
Syllabus
  • 1. Geography and population of Austria 2. Introduction to Austrian history (Babenberg and Habsburgs) 3. Austria from the First World War to the present (1918 to the present) 4. Habsburgs - European family and myth (important Habsburgs, films, literature, places connected with the Habsburgs) 5. History marketing - Commercialization of history and monuments on the example of the city of Vienna 6. Gastronomy and tourism in Austria, customs and traditions of Austria 7. Länder, regions and cities in Austria (taking into account the use of knowledge of Austrian realities in tourism, mainly in guide activities) 8. Realities - Switzerland (population, languages, culture and history, traditions, customs, festivities) 9. Regions and cities in Switzerland (taking into account the use of knowledge of Swiss realities in tourism) 10. Economy and tourism in Switzerland 11. Liechtenstein - realities and history 12. Luxembourg - realities and history 13. Summary and exercises
