Course objectives

The course focuses on the basic milestones, specifics and personalities of the history of monument preservation in the Czech and European scale from the oldest forms of social relationship to human works of the past to the current monument preservation. The course is focused on the development of relevant legislation, key personalities, specific examples from practice and key organizations developing their activities in the field of cultural heritage protection.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- explain the development of monument preservation from Antiquity to the present;
- describe the basic milestones, specifics and personalities of the history of monument preservation in the Czech and European scale;
- to analyze the activities of institutions and the legal regulation of monument preservation in history.

Syllabus

• 1. Literature and sources on the topic. Basic terminology.
• 2. Antiquity and the oldest forms of social relation to human works of the past. Protection of artifacts and buildings in the Middle Ages.
• 3. Profanation of the concept of monument in the Renaissance and the replacement of the sacral dimension by an aesthetic dimension.
• 4. Situation in the Baroque - Baroque historicism.
• 5. Enlightenment and the birth of modern monument preservation; situation in France, England and Germany in the 19th century.
• 6. Monument preservation and development of art history; interest in monuments and the development of the theory of architecture - style category (G. Semper).
• 7. The situation in the Czech lands from Romanticism to the establishment of the Club for Old Prague.
• 8. Vienna School of Art History and the Formation of Modern Preservation of Monuments in Central Europe around 1900 (A. Riegl, M. Dvořák).
• 9. Situation in Germany - homeland protection.
• 10. Situation in the Czechoslovak Republic: efforts for the law on protection of monuments, monuments and land reform, specifics of the situation in Moravia and Slovakia; prominent personalities, editorial deeds, exhibitions and specific events of restoration of monuments.
• 11. Situation during the occupation - monument preservation in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and in the Sudetenland.
• 12. Situation in the Czech lands and in Slovakia in the years 1945–1989, legal regulation and related organization of monument preservation (SÚPPOP, SÚRPMO, KSSPPOP, SPÚ, NPÚ).
• 13. International activities in the field of protection and registration of cultural heritage of world or international importance after 1945 (UNESCO, ICOMOS, CNK ICOMOS).
