Course objectives
The lectures offer basic information on theory and practice of modern textual criticism, inform about terminology, determination the most valuable witnesses and establishing the initial text.
Learning outcomes
The students shall be able to describe:
what is the role of the editor,
the relationship between literary and textual scholarship (criticism).
The students shall be able to characterize:
the main theoretical conceptions using in Czech republic and in other countries.
The students shall be able:
to understand the term "initial text",
to know which type of editions are in existence,
to know what is purpose of writing the commentary.

  • Dilettante vs. expert.
  • The editorʼs roles and intentions. The relationship between literary and textual scholarship (criticism).
  • Manuscripts. Books. Layout.
  • Author, his historical status and book law.
  • The main theoretical conceptions of textual criticism (Editionswissenschaft, scholarly editing, critique génétique).
  • Sorts of editorʼs approaches.
  • History of the text.

Lectures (with using of PowerPoint), class discussion, group and individual project.
Assessment methods
Active participation in the seminar. The final test (it consists of 11 questions, 7 correct answers is needed to pass).
