Course objectives
The course provides an overview of the development of European countries in the period from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century. It draws attention to the key stages and decisive events of political, religious, cultural and social history. Emphasis is placed on understanding the internal changes and external position of the Czech lands within the power field of (Central) European space, on a comparison with the development of surrounding state units, mutual contacts and spheres of influence. The interpretation is conceived chronologically and thematically, the aim is to lead students to the perception of context, the ability to grasp the basic developmental tendencies and parallels, to orient themselves in basic concepts of Czech and European history, to apply knowledge to cultural tourism projects. The seminar pays attention to selected problem areas of Czech and European history, the student deepens the ability to work with literature, perception of factography in the context of iconographic documents, monuments, cultural heritage, deepen basic knowledge through self-study.
Learning outcomes
By completing the course, the student will expand and deepen their knowledge of political, economic and social aspects of the historical development of the Middle Ages and early modern times by selected areas of cultural and social development. In particular, it will be an example analysis of the history of lifestyle, spiritual and religious life, customs and mentalities. Furthermore, the student will gain a basic overview of methodological discussions in the field of cultural history. The seminar part of the course will deepen students' ability to work independently with professional literature and selected sources.

  • 1. Great Moravia and Early Medieval Europe.
    2. The beginnings of the Czech state: Přemyslids, Empire and Central European states.
    3.-4. Centuries of the last Přemyslids, Czech-Austrian, Czech-Hungarian and Czech-Polish relations.
    5.-6. Luxembourgs and the new conception of the Bohemian state (Corona Regni Bohemiae), contacts with Western Europe.
    7. Hussites and its sounds in Europe.
    8. George of Poděbrady and his conception of the European community; Matthias Corvinus and the Bohemian-Hungarian Personnel Union.
    9. Jagiellonians: Polish-Lithuanian family on the Bohemian and Hungarian thrones.
    10.-11. The Habsburgs and their empire, over which the sun does not set.
    12. The Thirty Years' War: the first pan-European conflict, causes, key events, consequences.
    13. Enlightenment century: Maria Theresa and Joseph II., French, Prussian and Russian sounds.

Attendance at lessons (75%), active participation in discussions, written seminar work, presentation of a selected topic (PowerPoint). Successful completion of the exam in the form of a written test, oral discussion in the scope of the literature and the content of lectures.
