Course objectives
The Italian 1 course is intended primarily for students of the English and German programs, who can thus supplement their language skills. They will work with a modern Italian textbook, which includes both listening and useful grammar with a number of exercises of various types. Language teaching will be complemented by reading texts and working with them.
Learning outcomes
The student will learn the basics of Italian and go through 5 textbook lessons.
Syllabus

1.     Introduction (Introduzione): Italian pronunciation (c, g, z, double consonants, vowel length) and the Italian alphabet.


2.     Lesson 1A (Chi è?): Indefinite articles (un, uno, una, un'), noun and adjective endings, negation, the verb essere, and the formal form of address (Lei).


3.     Lesson 1B (Incontro in Italia): Texts Ecco una rivista, Roma, Praga, pronunciation notes, and Italian cities. 


4.     Lesson 2A (Com'è la rivista?): Definite articles (il, lo, la, l'), expressing case relations using the preposition di, and the verb avere.


5.     Lesson 2B (La macchina o la motocicletta?): Colours, introducing people, and the dialogue Ha tempo oggi, signorina?


6.     Lesson 3A (Le macchine italiane): Plural forms of nouns and adjectives, plural forms of articles (i, gli, le), the structures c'è / ci sono, the words molto, poco, troppo, and numbers 1–10.


7.     Lesson 3B (La collezione di fotografie): Text L'album di famiglia, family vocabulary, and the geography of Italy (seas, mountains, lakes).


8.     Revision I (Revisione I): Comprehensive revision and consolidation of the grammar covered in Lessons 1–3.


9.     Lesson 4A (Parli italiano?): Conjugation of regular verbs ending in -are (parlare) and -ere (prendere).


10.  Lesson 4B (Una famiglia ideale): Text Al bar, food and drinks, ordering in a café, irregular verbs leggere, giocare, sedere, and expressions such as ha fame / ha freddo.


11.  Lesson 5A (Mi piace molto la vita nella mia città): Prepositions di, a, da, in, su combined with definite articles (del, al, dal, nel, sul), the structure andare a fare, and the relative pronoun che.


12.  Lesson 5B (Interviste): Interviews and conversations about free time, hobbies, and daily routines.
