Course objectives
The student will acquire basic knowledge in the area of using monitoring methods for nature and landscape protection.
Learning outcomes
The student gradually prepares for the preparation of a seminar paper on a chosen topic from nature and landscape monitoring, using professional literature.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic principles and terminology of ecological monitoring. Collection of ecological information and evaluation of the effectiveness of protected areas. Purpose of change tracking. 2. Monitoring the status and threat of biological diversity. World programs and monitoring organizations. 3. Tracking changes. Changes in abiotic conditions. Changes in the mosaic of biotopes (map, aerial photograph, DPZ - remote sensing of the earth). 4. Monitoring and documentation of changes in species composition and physiological changes. Health monitoring (defoliation of trees). 5. Monitoring and documentation of habitat pollution. Eutrophication of waters. Acidification of soils and waters. Monitoring of air pollutants. 6. Indication of pollutants. Indication of nutrients and substances in the environment. Accumulation of toxic elements. Moss. Peatlands. 7. Changes in the population structure. Demographic indicators. Age structure, mortality. Territoriality. Mosaicity of the cover. 8. Changes in Communities. Habitat changes. Changes in the landscape. Landscape mosaic. Matrices, corridors, flats. Coverage category. CORINE land-cover. Category of land use (land use). Remote sensing of the earth (aerial and satellite images). 9. Forest health assessment using remote sensing. Changes in damage to forest stands. Use of remote sensing and geographic information systems in natural heritage documentation. 10. Monitoring in nature protection. Nationwide system of monitoring areas in small protected areas. 11. Monitoring programs of large-scale protected areas. 12. International agreements in the field of documentation and protection of natural heritage. Ecological networks within Europe. Content of internships: The student gradually prepares for the preparation of a seminar paper on a chosen topic from nature and landscape monitoring, using professional literature.
