Course objectives
The course introduces students to the possibilities of science communication with the public. The basic genres of classical science communication are introduced. Considerable attention is paid to the learning of practical skills in the preparation of outputs in these genres.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: - prepare an advanced popularization lecture - professional communication with the media - publish popularization outputs on the Internet - prepare more extensive popularization texts (brochure, book, WWW pages)
Syllabus
  • 1. Definition of "science communication", introduction of some terms, current definition of "science communication" 2. Science communication tools, Washington Charter, overview of science communication genres 3. Popularization lecture, basics of rhetoric, spoken language 4. Stylistic formations of public communication, most common errors in verbal expression 5. Acoustic aspect of spoken language, popular astronomy lecture 6. Public sky observation as an example of a popularization "output" 7. Communication with the media, publishing on the Internet 8. Short communications to the media, press release, press conference 9. Article for daily newspaper, "regular" magazine, professional journal 10. Specifics of internet publishing 11. Popularization brochure, popularization book 12. Popularisation presentation on the Internet
