- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to familiarize students with fundamentals of pedology (soil science), hydrology, soil and water protection and soil and water monitoring.
- Syllabus
- 1. Subject and tasks of soil science. Definition of soil. Soil as a part of ecosystems and as a component of the environment. European Soil Charter. Pedogenesis, pedogenic processes and soil-forming factors. Physical and chemical properties of soils, sorption properties of soils. Composition of soils, mineral phases in soils, organic substances in soils, water in soils. Soil texture and soil structure. Diagnostic soil horizons and their dominant soil-forming processes. Soil classification.
- 2. Human impact on soil quality, anthropogenic causes of soil degradation. Soil contamination, pollutants pathways into soil, long-range transport of pollutants.
- 3. Soil monitoring. Soil sampling and methods of analysis. Sampling and analysis of soil water and soil air. Soil quality indicators.
- 4. Monitoring of soil contamination in the Czech Republic. Hazardous elements and hazardous substances in agricultural soils. Agrochemical testing of agricultural soils. Register of contaminated sites. Basal soil monitoring system - methodology, monitoring plots.
- 5. Hydrosphere and human activity. Physical and chemical properties of water. European Water Charter. The EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC.
- 6. Human impact on aquatic ecosystems - direct and indirect effects. Eutrophication and acidification of water - their causes and consequences. Sources of water pollution. Self-cleaning processes in water. Hazardous substances in water. Contamination of surface water and groundwater.
- 7. Water quality monitoring. Basic concept of water quality. Water quality standards and indicators. Water sampling, processing, storage and analysis. Fundamental principles of analytical methods.
- 8. Evaluation and classification of water quality. Water monitoring according to the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC. Current state of surface water and groundwater monitoring in the Czech Republic.
