- Course introduces students to late stages of stellar evolution - to compact stars
- Learning outcomes
- Student will be introduced to current knowledge of compact stars
- Syllabus
- Course is organised as follows
- Late stage of evolution of massive stars, birth of white dwarf and neutron stars
- Simple description of compact star's matter - degenerate Fermi gas, equation of state of outer layers of neutron stars
- White dwarfs - simple description, Chandrasekhar limit
- Dense nuclear matter - neutron drip, beta equilibrium
- Realistic equations of state of neutron star matter
- Structure equations of neutron stars - equation of hydrostatic equilibrium, maximum mass, limits on compactness
- Pulsars
- Other theoretical models of compact stars - quark stars, strange stars, hybrid stars
- Rotation of neutron stars
- Neutron stars in binaries
- Binary systems of two compact objects, gravitational waves
- Cooling of white dwarfs and neutron stars
- Observations of neutron stars and related effects (X-ray bursts, gamma ray burst, X-ray pulsars, kilonovae)
