- Course objectives
- The course introduces students to the basics of astronomy and astrophysics by using the tools of mainly high school physics and mathematics; some parts (History of Astronomy and part of the Solar System chapter) are presented only in a popular form. The course, together with a basic physics course, also provides a sufficient foundation for the study of more advanced astronomy and astrophysics. - History of astronomy: Aristarchos, Hipparchos, Ptolemy, Aristotle, Copernicus, Brahe, Kepler, Galileo, Newton, Hubble, Einstein. - Spherical astronomy: coordinate systems, precession and nutation of the Earth's axis, aberration, parallax, refraction; constellations, maps and catalogues of stars; time, calendars. - Celestial mechanics: Newton's law of gravitation, escape velocity, Kepler's laws; orbital elements, Kepler's equation; relative positions of planets, synodic and sideric orbits. - Solar system: formation, planets and their moons, small bodies; moon, eclipses and occultations, tidal phenomena, libration; apparent and real motion of planets. - Radiation in astrophysics: characteristics of radiation; absolute blackbody radiation, temperatures; radiation of atoms and molecules, Boltzmann and Sah equations; continuous and line spectra. - Basic quantities of stars: stellar magnitude, Pogson's equation, color index and extinction, interstellar and atmospheric extinction; spectral classification, H - R diagram. - Binaries: classification of binaries, basic properties, mass function.
