Course objectives
The aim of the course is to clarify the role and position of the discipline of Social Pathology or Social Deviance in the system of sociology and other social sciences. Students will gain an orientation in professional terminology, social factors of the causes of individual social deviations will be analyzed. The discipline also introduces traditional and modern theories of social pathology/deviance. The above mentioned issues will also be illustrated by the example of works of Czech and foreign sociologists.
Syllabus
  • Interpretation of basic concepts - social norm, social pathology, social deviance, anomie, risk behaviour and other related concepts. Institute of social control, social sanctions. Traditional views on deviant behaviour, types and classification of social deviance, function of social deviance in society. Normative conception of social deviance. Reactive conception of social deviance - social reaction theory, secondary deviance, factors influencing social reaction, deviant career. Biological, psychological and sociological theories of deviant behaviour - major representatives and approaches. Endogenous and exogenous factors.
