Course objectives
The aim of the course is to delve deeper into the issues of working with people with visual impairments. The course will include interactive seminars, during which students will work with compensatory aids using experiential methods, learn to read and write in Braille, and explore the possibilities of leisure activities. The theoretical concept of the course is presented on the basis of current knowledge of ophthalmology so that the student is able to understand the nature, possibilities and limitations resulting from visual impairment.
Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: - the student will acquire and demonstrate knowledge of the basic terminology and the establishment of the special education discipline of ophthalmopaedia - the student can describe basic severe visual impairments and degrees of visual impairment - the student can characterize the psychological development of an individual with visual impairment in individual age periods - the student is familiar with specific options for education, counseling services and leisure activities Professional skills: - the student will learn the basics of Braille and spatial orientation - the student can work with compensatory aids, knows their possibilities and limits - the student will try out typhlographic work, will be able to create a basic relief image, while avoiding mistakes that lay typhlographics often make General competencies: - the student will be competent not only to use his knowledge and skills in specific work with individuals with visual impairments of various ages, but will also be better able to respond to their needs - the student is able to design activities and compensatory aids according to the individual capabilities of the clients, at the same time the teaching methods of the subject support the development of critical thinking, creativity and the student's ability to make decisions independently and responsibly
Syllabus
Contents: 1. Definition and characteristics of ophthalmology as a scientific discipline, including structure, position in the system of sciences, interdisciplinary links, contemporary terminology 2. History of care for individuals with visual impairments in our country and abroad 3. Development of visual perception, most common causes of visual impairment in terms of type, etiology, symptoms and manifestations 4. Degrees of visual impairment 5. Characteristics of blind people, specifics of their psychological development 6. Characteristics of people with residual vision, specifics of their psychological development 7. Characteristics of people with low vision and people with binocular vision disorders, specifics of their psychological development 8. Vision loss in adulthood, impact on psychological development, possibilities of re-education and compensation 9. Possibilities of education and counseling services 10. Compensatory aids for individuals with visual impairments. Braille. Typhlographics 11. Spatial orientation and independent movement of people with visual impairments 12. Leisure activity options
