Course objectives
The course is a profiling professional theoretical and practical one. It includes comprehensive knowledge about care of newborns, including anatomy and physiology of the newborn. It provides information on the clinical condition of physiological newborns, risk newborns, and pathological newborns. The course includes practical seminars allowing students to gain practical skills in the care of physiological, risk and pathological newborns.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students can describe and explain individual aspects of care of newborns, with an emphasis on care of physiological newborns.
Professional Skills: Students are able to use correctly chosen method of nursing assessment / history to evaluate the newborn’s state and plan care - diagnosis, determination of expected outcomes (objectives, criteria), interventions in selected states, and they can evaluate the care.
General Qualification: Students are able to decide independently and choose procedures in care of newborns and in education of the mother / parents of the child responsibly.
Competences: Students perform nursing care of physiological newborns using the method of nursing process within the scope of assigned competences of general nurses and under the supervision of a midwifery practician / specialist in childcare.

  • 1. Physiological newborn - basic terminology, factors affecting perinatal outcomes.
  • 2. Classification of newborns - pathological, risk, hypotrophic, post-term newborn.
  • 3. WHO recommendations for newborn care - holistic care focused on the family, health initiatives of the Health 21 program.
  • 4. Nursing assessment of somatic characteristics of the newborn.
  • 5. Needs of newborns from a holistic perspective.
  • 6. Nursing history / assessment of newborns.
  • 7. Planning and evaluation of care of newborns.
  • 8. Methods for evaluation of physiological newborns - an interview with
  • 9. Methods of evaluation of physiological newborn - interview with the mother of the child, observation, physical examination, screening of newborns.
  • 10. Interventions during the first treatment of the newborn after birth, first contact with the mother, rooming-in.
  • 11. Interventions in the treatment of newborns in the first week after birth.
  • 12. Methods for assessing the overall condition of the newborn - needs in terms of holistic approach.
  • 13. Standard care plans in selected states - diagnosis, expected results (goals, criteria), nursing interventions, assessment.
  • 14. Nursing documentation of care for physiological newborns, managing the record, print / electronic form.
  • 15. Education of the child's mother, observation, physical examination, screening of newborns.

Assessment methods
Fulfilment of 80% instruction attendance (students who cannot attend compulsory instruction for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling their study requirements) and passing a written test for credit. Oral examination.
