Requirements for obtaining course credit: 80% attendance at practical classes (students who are unable to attend mandatory classes for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative method of fulfilling the study requirements by the instructor). Compliance with the Operating Rules of the specialized classrooms.


Course credit requirements: Written tests with a minimum pass mark of 80% and a theoretical-practical performance assessment.


Examination requirements: Theoretical-practical examination (practical demonstration of a procedure).

Course objectives
Objectives:


The aim of the course is to enable students to acquire basic knowledge and manual skills necessary for performing professional nursing procedures. The course includes both theoretical instruction and practical training. Upon completion of the course, the student is able to perform individual nursing interventions in accordance with the latest evidence and established lege artis procedures. The course enables students to develop basic practical skills and confidence in the safe and high-quality performance of professional procedures and interventions for clients/patients.

Professional Knowledge: The student will acquire a broad foundation of theoretical knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures.


Professional Skills: The student is able to perform basic nursing techniques and procedures in practice in accordance with the latest requirements and standards.


General Competence: The student is able to assess the patient’s condition and select the most appropriate nursing procedure.


Competencies: The student provides individuals, families, groups, and their relatives with the necessary information in an appropriate manner within the scope of their competencies and performs individual nursing procedures.

Syllabus
Overview of Topics Covered:

  1. Ensuring a safe environment, ward equipment, and safety features in healthcare facilities (call systems, medical devices). Standards for professional procedures.
  2. Prevention of infection, hand hygiene, use of gloves, patient isolation, care of medical equipment, disinfection, and sterilization. Supporting patient activity, mobilization, examination and therapeutic positions. Patient admission, transfer and discharge, and ward rounds.
  3. Hygiene care, practical training in bed bathing, bed care and bed equipment, oral care, hair care, nail care, and foot care. Prevention of pressure ulcers and patient positioning.
  4. Nutrition – feeding patients, assistance with feeding patients with swallowing difficulties, weight monitoring and weighing, monitoring food and fluid intake, enteral nutrition, insertion of nasogastric and orogastric tubes. Dietary system.
  5. Vital signs – measurement of physiological functions: body temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation.
  6. Elimination – use of bedpans, urinary catheterization, fluid balance monitoring, enemas, and micro-enemas.
  7. Medication administration – oral and topical administration, administration into the eyes and ears, inhalation therapy, suppositories, and oxygen therapy.

8–10. Administration of medication by injection – subcutaneous (SC), intramuscular (IM), and intravenous (IV) administration; infusion therapy.

During continuous study, the student uses the study materials and completes selected correspondence assignments. In doing so, the student demonstrates knowledge of the compulsory literature and the content covered during face-to-face lectures. The student will be able to consult individually studied course topics on an ongoing basis via email, MS Teams, and individual or group consultations.
