Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to approximate the main constituents, participants and institutions of electoral systems of Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. The lecturer draws from principal knowledge of theory of political systems or political system of the Czech republic. The aim is also to analyse the peculiarities of these selected electoral systems, The course is focused partially on process of transition and democratic consolidation of these four political systems in post-communist period. The students will adopt the detailed knowledge of institutional structure in mentioned countries as well as principal elements which form individual electoral systems.

  • 1. Elections and their function in democratic society, suffrage. Delimitation of principal concepts
    2. Elections and partial systems, principal theories. Typology of electoral systems
    3. President elections in countries of central Europe, tradition of direct and indirect elections
    4. Local and regional elections in central European countries
    5. European elections and referendums in central European countries
    6. Elections and electoral rules in Slovakia and Czechoslovakia (comparison to main variables)
    7. Elections and electoral rules in Slovenia I.
    8. Elections and electoral rules in Slovenia II.
    9. Elections and electoral rules in Poland I.
    10. Elections and electoral rules in Poland II.
    11. Elections and electoral rules in Hungary I. Mixed electoral systems
    12. Elections and electoral rules in Hungary II.
