- Course objectives
- The course aims to provide students with information and skills in the field of nursing paradigm. The student learns procedures of systematic assessment of client/patient according to selected suitable conceptual framework with planning, implementation and re-evaluation of nursing care. The student acquires knowledge and skills of practical use of nursing philosophy, conceptual models and theories applicable in nursing care with focus on critical thinking. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student is able to describe and explain paradigms of nursing. Professional skills: The student is able to apply correctly selected method of nursing assessment/ anamnesis according to selected conceptual framework to assess client/patient's condition, next is able to plan nursing care - to make diagnosis, determine expected results (goals, criteria), to intervene at specific conditions. The student if able to evaluate nursing care and its results with feedback. General ability: The student is able to make independent decisions, is capable of critical thinking and responsibly chooses procedures of nursing care for client/patient. Competence: The student understands the meaning of paradigm in nursing. The students are able to apply their knowledge in nursing care of client/patient in health and illness. The student is able to define paradigm of this discipline; explain the terms: concept, model, theory, framework, conceptual model, conceptual framework, philosophy; is able to name types of philosophy, models, theories and their characteristics; is able to assess client/patient's condition according to selected conceptual framework.
- Syllabus
- Lectures:
1. Paradigm in nursing. Nursing as a scientific discipline. Basic terms - concept, model, framework, theory, philosophy. Relation of philosophy, models, theories to methodology of nursing.
2. Nursing philosophy, models, theories - categories of nursing philosophy, theories and models. Differences of nursing philosophy, theories and models.
3. Philosophical work in nursing.
4. Theory of nursing - mid-range and grand.
5. Nursing models.
Seminars:
1. Systematic assessment of client/patient using philosophical works (Nightingale, Watson, Benner, Ray, Martinsen, Eriksson).
2. Systematic assessment of client/patient using conceptual models (Johnson, King, Levine, Neuman, Orem, Rogers, Roy).
3. Systematic assessment of client/patient using nursing theories (Orlando, Pender, Newman, Parse, Leininger, Erickson, Tomlin, Swain, Husted, Mercer).
