- Course objectives
- The course is conceived as thematic theoretical and practical unit. The students will be provided with the most important general characteristics of microorganisms. The course will provide a basic structure of knowledge of bacteriology, virology, parasitology and mycology. The students will be provided with principles of occupational safety in hazardous workplaces, they will acquire detailed knowledge of principles of correct collecting and dispatching of infectious material, they will be acquainted with the most important laboratory microbiological examination methods. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The students can define basic methods in microbiology and immunology relevant to health-service staff, with an emphasis on prevention of nosocominal (hospital) and occupational infections and on basic orientation in clinical examinations. Professional skills: The students are able to orientate themselves in clinical microbiological and immunological methods used in diagnostic processes. General ability: The students can make use of their knowledge within prevention of nosocominal and occupational infections in hospital and community facilities, in correct handling of biological material and basic interpretation of laboratory results. Competence: While providing care, they execute their practice in accordance with up-to-date knowledge of the fields, adhering to all principles of asepsis and antisepsis; they are able to provide accurate and adequate information on home and community care.
- Syllabus
- 1. Position of medical microbiology, infection medicine and immunology in the human health system. Legislative standards and legal provisions related to prevention of infection spreading.
2. Macro- and microorganism relations and their importance for staying healthy, or for development of a disease.
3. Important human bacterial agents.
4. Important human viral agents.
5. Viral hepatitides and other viral diseases and their importance in medicine.
6. Estimation of a risk rate of viral agents effects on human beings' health conditions.
7. Nosocominal (hospital) infections in nursing, dangers to patients, but also to medical staff.
8. Main sources of viral agents' spreading in hospital facilities and institutions providing care of humans.
9. Fundamentals of immunology and immunoprevention.
10. Development of infectious diseases. Importance of immunology and immunosuppression to healthy and diseased population.
11. Prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. Prevention of viral hepatitis.
12. Prevention of nosocominal (hospital) disease transmission. Measures after occurrence of a nosocominal infection. Prevention of viral diseases. Prevention of diarrheal diseases. Prevention of infectious diseases transmitted by ticks.

Exam: a written test, cut-off score 80%.
