- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to acquaint students with specific clinical statuses and diseases in fields of surgery. The course describes symptoms and treatments for specific surgical statuses and explains basics and procedures of comprehensive nursing care of specific surgical diseases. Having finished the course, the students will orientate themselves in the issues of surgical nursing; they will be able to provide adequate nursing care of specific clinical statuses. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The students can characterize symptoms and treatments for specific surgical diseases (e.g. stomach, duodenum and pancreas diseases). They can define specifics of surgical interventions and postoperative care. Professional skills: The students are able to plan and provide care of specific clinical surgical statuses by the method of the nursing care. General ability: The students can compile a nursing anamnesis, diagnose nursing problems and plan care as well as assess the expected results in the change to patients' medical conditions independently. Competence: The students shall verify, enhance and deepen the acquired ability to work by the method of the nursing process with patients suffering form surgical diseases.
- Syllabus
- Lectures:
1. Thoracic surgery: injuries and clinical statuses, special preoperative preparation, positions of a patient during an operation, anaesthesia, specific surgical interventions: exploratory thoracotomy, lung resection, decortications of fibrous membranes, thoracoplasty, dangers and complications during an operation and after it.
2. Vascular surgery: clinical statuses, special preoperative preparation, positions of a patient during an operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions: endarterectomy, bypass, angioplasty, aneurysms, varicose veins, and amputation of an ischemic limb, dangers and complications during an operation and after it.
3. Breast surgery: clinical statuses, special preoperative preparation, positions of a patient during an operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, dangers and complications during an operation and after it.
4. Thyroid gland operations: clinical statuses, special preoperative preparation, positions of a patient during an operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, dangers and complications during an operation and after it.
5. Operations of adrenal glands: clinical statuses, special preoperative preparation, positions of a patient during an operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, dangers and complications during an operation and after it.
6. Movement system traumatology: clinical statuses, special preoperative preparation, positions of a patient during an operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, dangers and complications during an operation and after it.
7. Polytraumas (multiple traumas): description, fundamentals of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Significance and a method of vital functions
8. Orthopaedics: injuries of ligaments, bones and joints, dislocations, total joint replacement, traumatic amputations; special preoperative preparation, positions of a patient during an operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, dangers and complications during an operation and after it.
9. Urology: clinical statuses and traumas, special preoperative preparation, position of a patient during an operation, anaesthesia, urologic interventions: on kidneys, urinary tract; dangers and complications during an operation and after it.
10. Cardiac surgery: clinical statuses and traumas, special preoperative preparation, position of a patient during an operation, anaesthesia, cardiac surgery interventions: coronary arterial bypass, interventions on valves, heart transplantation, dangers and complications during an operation and after it.
11. Burns: causes, organ pathophysiology, types of burns; extent and depth assessment, non-surgical and surgical therapy, care.
Seminars and practical sessions:
1. Nursing process for a patient suffering from a surgical disease of lungs, with a thoracic operation. Care of a closed chest drainage. Care of drains and a drainage system.
2. Nursing process for a patient suffering from a surgical disease of vessels.
3. Nursing process for a patient after limb amputation.
4. Nursing process for a patient suffering from a surgical disease of the breast.
5. Nursing process for a patient suffering from a surgical disease of the thyroid gland.
6. Nursing process for a patient with an injury of the movement system.
7. Nursing process for a patient with a polytrauma.
8. Nursing process for a patient with an orthopaedic operation.
9. Nursing process for a patient with a urologic operation.
10. Nursing process for a patient with a cardiac surgery operation.
11. Nursing process for a patient with burns.

- Credit requirements: Attendance in a minimum of 80 per cent of seminars and submitting of a seminar essay are required for completion. Students who could not attend a number of lessons for serious reasons will be assigned extra tasks.
Credit test, a minimum of 80 per cent of correct answers is required.
Exam requirements: oral examination.
