Course objectives
The objective of the course is to furnish the student with knowledge and skills in the following areas: vocabulary (health, medicine, nursing and allied disciplines), analysis of written texts, situational dialogues (at doctor´s office, casual encounters, practical nursing situations, while handling nursing equipment), English for journal reading, English for conference presentations/client instruction/articles, listening skills. Expected outcomes: the student shows reproducible signs of being able to handle medium-dificulty articles on health, to discuss common issues with patients and colleagues. Shows sufficient competence in medical/nursing terminology use and grammar rules application. After graduation from the 4-semester course, the student should be able to comprehend authentic English medical/nursing texts, create a compact written product in English (essays), make themselves understood at international conferences on health subjects, decipher a common spoken discourse. Emphasis is placed on the development of all five language skills - reading, writing, speaking, translation and listening.

Presentation, discussion, translation, learner activation, simulation, pair work
Reading: reading comprehension, sentence analysis, translation. Speaking: topic discussion, oral presentation, nurse-patient dialogues. Listening: video sequences, nurse songs, dictations. Writing: essays, fill-in handouts, medical papers. Mixed skills: crossword puzzles, knowledge tests, vocabulary practice, grammar exercises.
Credit Pass
>85 per cent attendance in practical sessions
Contionuous assessment: student performance and activity evaluation, essay assessments, written home assignment - translation (ca. 2 pages A4), vocabulary revision, classroom presentation 5-10 minutes on a topical health issue, micro-teaching a grammar exercise, discussion. Final assessment: written test (vocabulary, paragraph translation, matching) - scored with a minimum of 80 per cent correct answers or as stipulated
