Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the health psychology discipline, main areas, approaches, conceptions and models. Attention will be paid to specific issues of health and illness, mental stress, stress. Students will be acquainted with salutors and stressors, vulnerability and resilience. They will also gain basic knowledge about psychosomatic, burnout, mental hygiene.
Syllabus
  • 1. Psychology of health. Main characteristics of health psychology. Subject and objectives of psychology of health. Focus areas of health psychology. Related disciplines. Applying of health psychology in practice.
    2. Main thematic areas of health psychology - approaches, conceptions, models.
    3. Development of concept and definition of health. Bio-psycho-socio-environmental conception of health, global health conception (including moral and spiritual factors). Significant representatives of the psychology of health in our country and in the world.
    4. Health prevention and support, health supporting behavior. Positive emotionality and health. Salutogenesis and health moderators.
    5. Psychological stress and vulnerability of personality. Categories of subjectively experienced mental stress. Taxonomy of stress situations.
    6. Stress and health. Coping with stress.
    7. Perceived social support as a protective factor.
    8. Salutors and stressors. Measure of major life events. Factors regulating the relationship between stress and health.
    9. Vulnerability and resilience. Overview of significant concepts of mental resilience.
    10. Factors that may be or may not be affected, risky and protective factors acting in the relationship between health and disease.
    11. Personality and health. Personality attributes influencing stress response (personality type A, C, B).
    12. Psychosomatic and psychological hygiene.
    13. Burnout syndrome. Symptoms of burnout syndrome, phases of the burnout process, risky and protective factors of burnout.

Teacher's information
Student, on a concrete example work with senior, develops an analysis of his insights into illness and health, self-reflection, suggestions for further work. Student demonstrates knowledge of basic literature and also will be able to continuously consult the individually studied subject topics by e-mail, individual or group consultations.
