- Course objectives
- The course objective is to acquaint students with basic terminology of medical disciplines and advanced terminology of dentistry, dental hygiene and related fields. The aim of the introductory seminars/exercises is also to deepen knowledge of English grammar and conversation in connection with previous study of the foreign language. The English 2 course builds on the knowledge of the English 1 course
- Learning outcomes
- Professional Knowledge: Students have a passive and active command of an expanded set of professional English terminology in the field. They have knowledge of grammar and communication rules at least at the intermediate level.
Professional Skills: Students can appropriately use professional Latin terminology both in speech and writing. Students can apply translatological skills to professional texts of medium to higher difficulty.
General Qualification: Students are well versed in the professional terminology and use acquired knowledge in communication and while studying professional texts.
Competences: Students can communicate in English about professional topics (communication with the patient, foreign experts) and can understand English professional text of medium to higher difficulty. Students are able to participate in a conference conducted in the foreign language and communicate effectively with English speaking patients. - Syllabus
- 1. Revision of the course subject matter of English 1. Summary of key terminology of medical fields, dentistry and dental hygiene.
- 2. Terminology 12 - Expanding vocabulary to the anatomy of the mouth and dentition.
- 3. Terminology 13 - Expanding vocabulary on medical aids and tools with an emphasis on dental equipment and instruments.
- 4. Terminology 14 - Expansion vocabulary on dentition diseases. Tooth decay, plaque, tartar, endodontic, and periodontal diseases.
- 5. Terminology 15 - Expanding vocabulary on surgery in the oral cavity. Oral surgery and prosthetics. Bridges, crowns, veneers, dentures, implants.
- 6. Terminology 16 - Expansion vocabulary on orthodontics. Types of orthodontic appliances. Care of teeth with fixed braces. Education of patients in English.
- 7. Terminology 17 - Expanding vocabulary on dental materials.
- 8. Terminology 18 - Expanding vocabulary in teeth whitening, aesthetic and functional aspects of dentition and the role of teeth and tongue to produce speech.
- 9. Terminology 19 - Expansion vocabulary on cleaning dentition. Toothbrushes and interdental brushes, dental floss, mouthwash. Teeth cleaning procedure and patient education in the area of dental aids. Psychological approach to the patient.
- 10. Terminology 20 - Expanding vocabulary on hygiene, prevention (Universal Precautions), protective equipment, disinfection and sterilization.
- 11. Working with specialized texts in the field of dental hygiene. Analysis, translation, intepretation and text summary 1.

Evidence base in dental hygiene. Participation in specialist conference in English, communication with professionals, team communication. Recovery foreign language mobile applications in the field.

- Assessment methods
- Fulfillment of 90% instruction attendance at seminars / training, presentation of a topic before class and completion of a written test as a condition of awarding credit.
Ongoing evaluation takes place at training / seminars - student activity, presentation of formal and substantive requirements (factual accuracy, interactivity, list of sources).
Translation: Translation 1-2 standard pages of English text into Czech. Assessed are adequacy of vocabulary, grammar and functional equivalence. Individual work. field.
